Ukrainian authorities have located and arrested two men who kidnapped a wealthy Bitcoin miner just days before. The incident took place on November 26th, when the two suspects – brothers aged 30 and 34 – tracked and kidnapped the Bitcoin miner. They then gained access to his apartment and Bitcoin wallet, stealing $50,000 from him.
The two men – as if in a movie – literally waited in the bushes outside of the miner’s apartment, and waited for him to come home. Afterward, they ambushed the individual and made him surrender his apartment key after kidnapping him and taking him to a nearby forest. The incident took place in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, that has a population of about 2.8 million.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that a kidnapping involving cryptocurrency has occurred in Ukraine. Pavel Lerner was also involved in the mining business as well as being the director of a cryptocurrency exchange named Exmo, and was abducted by “unknown masked people” late last year.
Luckily, Lerner was ultimately freed after a ransom of $1 million in Bitcoin was paid, although it was unclear who paid the sum.
Ukraine has been making international headlines, as tensions with Russia seem to be increasing. Most recently, Ukraine has taken steps to bar Russian men from entering the country. Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko has warned repeatedly that the tensions could elevate to a “full-scale war”.
